My students are generally interested in reading H.G. Wells’ classic science fiction novel, The War of the Worlds. They can’t wait to get started reading once I take a little time hooking them with the background information: you know, the Orson Welles’ radio drama that spread panic when some people famously mistook it for a news broadcast.

Also, a good portion of my students are familiar with the film version featuring Tom Cruise, which helps build connections. Of course, every year some try to watch the film to circumvent the reading, which totally doesn’t work since so many liberties were taken with the big screen adaptation, but I digress. These worksheets and activities should help you check to see if your students are actually reading, or just trying to watch the movie. The War of the Worlds Worksheet Chapters 1-3: Nine comprehension and review questions to inspire your students to read these chapters. The War of the Worlds Worksheet Chapters 4-6: Ten more plot review and inferential questions on chapters four through six of the novel. The War of the Worlds Worksheet Chapters 16 – Book II Chapter 1: More comprehension and reading skills questions on the novel.

This worksheet covers chapter sixteen from book one and chapter one from book two. The War of the Worlds Map Project: students review major plot events from the novel in a constructive way by creating illustrated maps that chart the journey of the narrator and his brother along paths of destruction. The War of the Worlds Test: twenty-five multiple choice questions on major events from the novel. Use this to better assess whether your students read the novel or just watched the Tom Cruise movie.
